Our client, the #2 integrated steel producer in the US, is seeking Project Managers for their Hamilton facility in Ontario.

POSITION TITLE: Project Manager

REPORTS TO: Manager of Engineering

LOCATION: Ontario, Canada

OUR CLIENT:

Our client is the #2 integrated steel producer with major production operations in the United States, Canada and Central Europe. The company manufactures a wide range of steel products for the automotive, appliance, container, industrial machinery, construction, and oil and gas industries. Additional services offered by the company include mineral resource management, engineering, and consulting.

SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Project Manager will manage engineering project activities within a plant or region of the company. They will lead a diverse group of technical personnel in all phases of a project from the identification of the business case, initial planning, scope, benefits and cost estimates, through development of an appropriation, management of the project construction and finally the start-up of a facility all within the target time and cost.

Key responsibilities:

  • Participate at a plant level position providing daily management, planning and execution of projects.
  • Develop short-term strategic plans to address safety, quality, and production issues as well as long term plans to correct infrastructure problems throughout a facility.
  • Develop plant strategies to improve the profitability of the company and help to effectively implement those plans.
  • Lead activities in the project development process to prepare the necessary capital appropriation or cost expenditure request for presentation to the Plant Appropriation Committee and Decision Review Board.
  • Provide project management and technical expertise at a high level of proficiency to execute the Capital plan and All Cost Projects in the plant's business plan.
  • Implement and execute company involvement in contractor safety and environmental compliance programs.
  • Provide technical assistance to operating and other staff functions.
  • Direct outside engineering firms in the preparation of detailed equipment and installation specifications and design drawings, as well as inspection services as requested.
  • Conduct a thorough review of contractor installation proposals and recommend acceptable suppliers.
  • Manage a project portfolio with various stakeholders and other technical personnel. Provide accurate forecasting of expenditures and schedule performance.
  • Provide mentoring of Management Associates, Cooperative Education, and Intern personnel, and ensure training plans are developed where skills need improved.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current technology through plant visits, continuing education, seminars and technical exchanges.
  • Travel as required

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • A minimum of 3 years project management experience in the steel or related heavy industry is required.
  • Must have major project experience (>$10MM in scope) working with a gated capital project development process.
  • Possess the skills necessary to utilize the commonly accepted tools for project development and controls, and proficiency with similar computer software tools is desirable.
  • Demonstrate a high level of energy and commitment to improve the company’s performance

EDUCATION:

  • BS degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Scientific discipline or the equivalent in related work experience.
